The Woldsmen make the short trip to Bridlington, for the 1st derby of the season. The 2nds host Yarnbury:

Big game weekend with Driffield at Bridlington; always a tight, tough match. The last few seasons we have only met in the Turnbull Trophy and have won the last 3. Last year we played on Easter Saturday, Brid winning 24-10. In league matches we have to go back to the 2012/13 season for our last match. That year, due to Bridlington’s run in the Cup, we only met once, at Kelleythorpe with Driffield winning 33-10. Driff went on to win the league, and Brid won the Cup at Twickers.

Bridlington came up from Yorkshire 1 as champions last season, running away with the league, losing only 3 times and finishing 16 points ahead of West Leeds. The two met in the opening game last weekend at Bridlington, Bridlington snatching a last minute win 28-26. In pre-season Brid have played Bev, Hullensians & Ilkley, I can only find the Ilkley result, Ilkley winning 34 – 24.

Driffield had a good start with a bonus point win at home against Bradford & Bingley. The game was close until the last 20 mins. Then Driffield’s fitness came out on top, scoring three in the last 15. The team performed well, with no major injuries either. I thought the backs looked sharp as ever, the forwards looking fitter than ever.

I know it is only the 2nd weekend of the season, but I feel this match has a lot riding on it. For both it will be a test of how far they have come, and if they are ready for the league. I’m sure it will be tough physical match as usual, with a of bit niggle to add in.

Brid will be expecting a big crowd looking for a home win, but I’m sure there will be enough from Driffield to cheer the boys on too.

2nd team welcome Yarnbury for their 1st league match of the season.  The two played each other on 5 occasions in the league last year, so they know each other well. The 2nds lost narrowly at Scunthorpe last weekend 22 – 17. After travelling with 16, at this early stage is not a bad result.

Good Luck to everyone this weekend.
