Gritty Display by 3rd XV
Published: 15/12/2009
In an entertaining and gritty match Driff 3rds were beaten by points but certainly not for lack of effort. Coming into the game without a recognised front row was always going to cause the 3rds problems in the scrum especially and so it proved with outstanding No 8 Kiwi Ray and scrum half Sam Wordsworth (who had another good game at this new found position) getting very little decent ball from the scrum. This ultimately proved to be to the cents undoing as they matched Brid in all areas of the park but were unable to really test the Brid backs by running at them with ball in hand. Robinson (7) played another good game, relishing in taking the ball over the gain line on many occasions. Following a decent period of pressure from the Cents they found themselves in their own half where they conceeded a converted try mid way through the first half. Driff matched Brid in the rooks and mauls and were unlucky not to convert more chances to points. It was Brid who scored again to put them 12-0 up at half time. Sam Shipley was quick to react to a Brid handling error and raced to the try line with 5 defenders in tow, but he was too quick and Tom Woodward converted to put the Cents back in the game. With time running down and Brid a man down following foul play Driff were unable to convert their advantage into points and with the last play of the game were unlucky to conceed a converted try. Overall it was a solid display from Driff who have struggled in the scrum all season but credit to the lads for sticking at it, with heads held high. Big Thanks to Fez Ullyott for reffing at short notice.
