FINE CHRISTMAS EFFORT AT SANDAL.

Published: 21/12/2009

Bash takes a half time power nap at Sandal.

For those that made the hazardous trip to Wakefield on Saturday, they were rewarded with a fine game. The pitch was ideal for running rugby and Driff responded with some excellent handling.

Three bus loads of Driff supporters turned up, but perhaps the most notable performance was from Ross Weekes who accompanied with his Zimmer frame and wife Liz (who supplied hot beverages) walked from Driffield to Sandal for his pet charity. He set off at 5.45 AM but arrived in time for KO. His Charity is ‘Free repatriation for Welsh émigrés back to the Principality’

The game was very one sided. Driff’s front five took Sandal apart, Lamping securing 12 heels against the head, and his predecessor at hooker Havler was all over the field in the back row with J.Dervey and Beachell, causing untold damage to the Sandal threes. Hamilton secured all the ball in the lineout, very reminiscent of his Father, although many say he isn’t as handsome but easier understood.

Halfbacks worked with well oiled Aussie precision, and it was no surprise that Driff scored 14 tries, all converted by Birch. The one sad thing was that everyone scored a try except Plumridge, what an unlucky player he is. But he can take some consolation in the fact that he gave 10 of the scoring passes. To keep a clean sheet against a side like Sandal is indeed a credit to Driff’s defence.

Bash Burdass, whose gleaming smile lights up the Driffield papers on a regular basis, was well pleased with the performance; even coach Bone nodded his head sagely.

What will excite Bash further was the breaking news that Lewis Moody and Carl Hayman, when they retire from Premiership rugby after Christmas, have both agreed to see out their rugby careers at Driff. This will be a fillip for the 1st team squad, but of course they will have to battle for their places with the stalwart Dervey brothers.

Congratulations to Chairman Kitch for this coup. He has promised them free heating oil for life wherever they live as well David Beckham’s house on the Palm at Dubai (subject to the approval of the Saudi Royal Family).

The only downer of the weekend was the fateful news that the so far unbeaten 2nd XV had been beaten by Sandal Cougars 94 – nil. Work to be done there Dominic and Carl!

Merry Christmas to all our readers.
