Hull 2nds 24 - Driffield 2nds 18
Published: 30/03/2010
Driffield travelled to Hull for their penultimate Yorkshire Premier
League match with Ollet in at scrum Half and Coach Thompson back on the
bench.
Hull started very well running hard at the driffield line and unlike the
week before Driffield's first up tackling was poor. Against the run of
play, driffield took the lead when after a good lineout take & drive
from the forewards ollet broke blind and drew his man for Holland to run
over the last two defenders for a good score in the corner.
This was to be the last try off the half for driffield as poor
discipline and bad tackling cost the team dearly, Hull were putting
together some good phases of play and there back row was beginning to
dominate the match, they were very effective at turning ball over and
slowing down Driffields ball. Lucas kicked a penalty for Driffield but
Hull scored two good tries and kicked a couple of penalties themselves
before halftime leaving Driffield trailing 16-8.
With the Wind right behind them Driffield applied pressure to the Hull
line but some poor decision making from both driffield and the referee
left the score as it was at halftime. Thompson made several
substitutions with Butler, Travis and Llewellyn all coming onto the
pitch. Hull kicked another penalty after the referee marched driffield
back 30 meter's for back chatting !
With 8 minutes to go Stathers made a fine break from Hull's ten metre
line and smashed through the Hull full back to score under the posts,
Lucas converted and the match was on 19-15 Hull. However the joy was
short-lived when driffield failed to control the kick off and Hull
recycled the ball and scored out wide to make it 24-15 with 3 minutes to
go. Credit to driffield who kept fighting and after a great foreward
charge Lucas kicked another penalty making the score 24-18 with only the
kick left.
This time the kick off was taken but after a few efforts at running the
ball from their own 22 metre line a knock on signalled the end of the
game.
This was a tough match played in good spirit by both team's and Hull
defiantly deserved there win, the lesson should be learnt by this young
2nd team that preparation for every game is key and no team deserves to
win a match because they played well the week before!
Risdale, Norman and Stathers all had good games but too often the pack
went one phase to much and we lost the ball.
Andrew Fraser was Man of the Match for a great effort in the loose and
also for demolishing two props during the game.
