Driffield RUFC v Sheffield Tigers RUFC, Sat 10/11/2018 2.15pm KO.

This weekend is a free weekend in league fixtures, so the Yorkshire Cup takes centre stage. Sheffield Tigers make the trip from South Yorkshire to Kelleythorpe with a place in the 3rd round the prize.

Tigers are enjoying their third seasonĀ in National League 2 North and sit in 10th place in the league. They have won 4 and lost 6 so far this season.

The last time we met (from what I can find) was back in the 2006/07 North 2 East League : Driffield won at home and Tigers won at Sheffield.

Tigers got a bye through the 1st round, so this will be their 1st outing in the Cup. Driffield beat Hull Ionians 2nds 74 – 7 in the 1st round.

Team News:

Both teams have lots of changes compared to their last outings in the league. With it being a free weekend on the fixture list, a few players are unavailable, and a couple more are carrying long term strains that need a week off.Ā  These fixtures are useful for giving players ‘on the fringe’ an outing to show what they can do.

It is hard to say how interested the higher Yorkshire teams are in the Cup. The 1st round is always hard for them, as it is on a league weekend for them. Looking through this weekend’s fixtures, 5 out of the 8 matches have been cancelled.Ā  Out of those 5, Malton v Doncaster Phoenix is the only postponed (due to Malton re-playing their cancelled game at Consett) we will see if it gets played. The other 4 are all walkovers. It seems as though the League is more important than the Cup for most – we will see what happens regarding the Cup in future.

I’m sure both sides will give it 100% tomorrow, with a home tie against Sandal the prize in round 3.
