Welcome to another rugby weekend.  A warm welcome to Kendal RUFC and Harrogate Pythons RUFC.

Our 1st XV entertain Kendal RUFC for the very first time in our history on Saturday.  Kendal joined North One East following relegation from North Premier last season, and a lack of teams in North One East led to them being transferred across from North One West.  Kendal have been playing in the national leagues as far as I can search back to 08/09 season at least.

I’m sure many will have had Kendal down as pre-season pace-setters : however, they have had slow start to the season. They lost their opening match at Durham City 45 – 5 followed by another loss last week losing to visitors Scarborough 20 – 26.  From reading their match reports it seems they started the season missing a few key players, who are slowly coming getting back into the squad. Check their reports here: https://www.kendalrugby.co.uk/

We carried on our good start to the season with a great away win at Durham last weekend. We managed to get 19 – 0 up in the 1st 10 minutes, before Durham got on the score board just before half time. In the second half Durham broke through our defences on a few occasions, but each time they did we hit back straight away.  Final score 27 – 43 : match report here: https://driffieldrufc.com/2019/09/19/durham-city-27-43-driffield-saturday-21-september-2019/

Injuries and unavailability means a couple of changes for our 1st XV, but only on the bench. Syson, Turner and Kelly join the squad in place of Furbank, Soanes and Brant.

Big numbers at training for the last two months means we have three teams playing this Saturday.

  • The 2nd team have another tough test, travelling to Scunthorpe to face their 2nd XV.  Last week the 2nds snatched a last-minute win against Sheffield 2nds at Kelleythorpe, with Colin Lucas kicking the 81st minute penalty for the win 14 – 13
  • The 3rds have their 1st outing of the season this Saturday, as they welcome Harrogate Pythons RUFC to Kelleythorpe

Our Ladies had another fine win last weekend, this time at Brantingham Park. They beat Hull Ionians Ladies 12 – 29 to maintain their 100% start.  Unfortunately, Kesteven Ladies have called off their match this weekend, as they are struggling to raise a side, so the ladies will send a selection to Malton for a ladies festival on Sunday.

Our senior sides have a 100% record at this moment. Congrats to all involved – a great start.

This Saturday is our Ladies Day at Kelleythorpe. The pre-match meal had been sold out for months now and I believe we are feeding around 170 ladies.  This means the club will be closed to gents before the game, so we will have a bar and food outside.  The weather is expected to be fine so all should be well.  Music and dancing is expected late into the evening for all.  So get yourself down and support the blue, black & white.
