Driffield 1st XV travel to Consett RUFC, the 2nds host York RUFC 2nds, and the Ladies head to Carlisle on Sunday.

Another weekend has arrived and once again we have some great rugby to look forward too.

The 1st XV make the trip North to face Consett RUFC in North 1 East.  This is Consett’s second visit to North 1 East, having being promoted at the end of the season that wasn’t.  Their first stint in the league was only two seasons past, when they had a tough time, winning just 7 matches that season and finishing bottom of the pile.  Consett didnt get their 1st XV on the board that season until the end of November when they won at Cleckheaton 39 – 37.  They had to wait until the New Year for their second win and first at home, when they turned us over 17-7 – I’m sure the Driffield players and supporters will remember that day.  We beat them at Kelleythorpe 54-31 earlier in the season.

Again Consett are looking for their first win of the season after suffering three losses in the opening weekends.

  • Week 1 – they faced a tough challenge visiting Ilkley, and Ilkley won 82-0.
  • Week 2 – Consett welcomed Cleckheaton, and Cleckheaton took the points 34 – 20, but a tighter game.
  • Week 3 – they travelled to Moortown and lost 59 – 17

A win is not a gift up at Consett, which I’m sure Rob and the coaches have been repeating all week.

We finally found our game last week against a pretty poor Durham side, who didn’t really look like troubling us from the off.  However, Driffield left plenty of points out there. A good showing again by the back row, and newcomer Rix seemed to fit straight in. It was very good to see Pettinger back on the pitch, in a pretty mobile front row along side Nellen.  Bad news with Ben Dinsdale taking his place on the ever-growing physio bench, hopefully not for too long.

Joe Robinson returns this week and starts at scrum half, with James Watts moving to full back with Ryan Murray not available.  Rix starts at outside centre following Ben Dinsdale’s Injury, alongside Johnson.  Short starts on the wing along with Kelly, and Brigham staying at 10.  In the forwards the only change is skipper Mewburn starting at 7, with Brankley moving to bench.  Rob Murray joins Paul Dervey on the bench.

The second XV have started in great form : a big win last weekend at Sheffield Tigers 29 – 26.  This week they welcome York to Kelleythorpe.

Ladies start the season with a league game away at Carlisle Cougars, following their promotion last season.  Let’s see if they can do it again.
