1st and 2nd XVs head to Sandal, 3rds head to BP, there is no game for the 4ths, and Colts and Ladies at home on Sunday.
1st XV head to Sandal on the back of their win over Ilkley last weekend. The Ilkley game was in the balance for 60 minutes, then Driffield managed to extend their lead in the final 20 to finish comfortable winners 45 – 18.
This week’s opposition, Sandal, have been in good form recently after having a slow start to their campaign. We 1st met on week 2, Driffield winning 52 – 31. Driffield always had control of the game, and again Sandal faded in the last quarter. It took Sandal until week 5 to register their first win : that came against Paviors at Sandal, 34 – 12. Since then they have only lost at York and at Home to Billingham, including a home win over high-flying Alnwick. Last week Sandal drew 20 all with Cleckheaton. Sandal lie 7th in the league with 27 points.
Driffield stay 5th in the league following last week’s win. At the half-way point in the season, we have beaten every team below us, and lost to the four above us. With only the league winners being promoted, Billingham look favourites for that slot, with Alnwick and Heath pushing them all the way. Two teams get relegated : with West B sitting bottom on 11 points they will need a miracle to bridge the gap. The second relegation spot is held by Scunthorpe on 13 points, and one must assume the same about them, although Ilkley, Paviors, Phoenix and Sandal will al be looking to get clear from the fight.
Second XV once again travel with the 1sts. They had another good win last weekend, 75 – 0 over Ilkley 2nds. If there was a Regional 1 North East 2nd XV league, we would be runaway leaders, I should think.
3rd XV travel to Hull to face BP once again. 3rds completed the wins last weekend with a 48-20 win over Hullensians 2nds.
Ladies and Colts play on Sunday at home : Colts 11am KO, Ladies 2PM. All support welcome.
