Another tough game for our 1st XV, as they headed to Castle Park to face Doncaster Phoenix.  With Phoenix just 2 places behind in the league, this was a game that had to be won to maintain the pressure on the top teams.

In the first meeting this season, the Woldsmen won 27-15.  It was a tight game, with Driffield scoring twice in the last 10 minutes to take the lead and despite a very late score to Phoenix, Driffield took the win.

Driffield were the first to score, with two penalties by Watts in the first 30 minutes.  Doncaster Phoenix 0 – 6 Driffield

On the half-hour they stretched the lead with a try by Sowersby, converted by Watts.  Doncaster Phoenix 0 – 13 Driffield

That was the score at half time, but Phoenix got on the board ten minutes into the second half with a converted try.  Doncaster Phoenix 7 – 13 Driffield

Five minutes later, Driffield extended the lead further with a Dinsdale try, unconverted.  Doncaster Phoenix 7 – 18 Driffield

And six minutes got another one through Brankley, converted by Watts.  Doncaster Phoenix 7 – 25 Driffield

Still reeling from the score, Phoenix let Dinsdale in for his second just two minutes later, converted by Watts.  Doncaster Phoenix 7 – 32 Driffield

And Pettinger knocked the final nail into the coffin with a try with five minutes to go.  Final score Doncaster Phoenix 7 – 37 Driffield

All in all, an excellent five-point win away from home.
